More information about The Derby

What is Epsom Derby day?

One of the most prestigious horse racing events in the country, Epsom Derby Day is the ultimate test of a thoroughbred’s speed and stamina. The Epsom Derby is open to three year old colts and fillies, with a prize of over £850,650 going to the winner.

History of the Epsom Derby

With races dating back as far as 1661, the Epsom Derby has a long and rich history. Annual races began in the 1930s, but it was at a social gathering in 1778 that Sir Charles Bunbury and the 12th earl of Derby, Edward Stanley, together with their group, conceived ‘The Oaks’ - a race for three-year-old fillies.
Soon after, the race grew to include colts and fillies with an apparent coin toss giving the Earl of Derby the honor of naming the race after himself. Today, the Epsom Derby has grown into a weekend festival and one of the most elite horse races in the world.

When is Epsom Derby Day?

The annual Epsom Derby 2022 is held on the first weekend of June.  ‘Oaks Day’ or ‘ladies’ day’ is held on Friday 3rd June, with the infamous flat race held on Saturday 4th June.
Featuring seven races, including the ‘Greatest Flat Race in the World’, the Epsom Derby proves challenging thanks to its sharp inclines, rapid left-turns and undulating terrain.

What to do at the Epsom Derby?

While horse racing is undoubtedly the main event, what is Epsom Derby Day without its musical acts, fashionable spectators and top-class hospitality?
During the day, guests can dine in a choice of three restaurants situated at the Epsom Downs Racecourse, watch horses thunder down the Tattenham Straight from a private box or get a ticket to access enclosures, like the exclusive Moët & Chandon Terrace. Filled with glamour and prestige, consider chartering an Epsom helicopter to make your VIP’s event even more special.
