The history behind the Notting Hill Carnival
In May 1959, a 32-year-old Kelso Cochrane died due to the racially motivated attack on Southam Street Notting Hill. The murder had a significant footprint on racial relations with thousands of people attending the funeral. It all started with the small community children’s street fayre to facilitate the communication and cultural exchange between people of different nationalities. Later on, it evolved into Notting Hill Carnival, the popularity of which has been increasing for the last 5 decades.
